The award was created in order to promote the ancient art of the potter and to enhance that wisdom of ‘making’ at the basis of the artisanal and artistic production of Italian ceramics and that of our City. The award is intended to recognize the importance of the potter’s trade and to stimulate young people to pursue training in the potter’s trade.
This ancient craft is now in danger of disappearing because of the high age of so many of these craftsmen and the difficulty of training a new generation of turners. Yet this craft, which holds an important place among those of Italian artistic craftsmanship, cannot be replaced by industrial manufacturing processes.
In the belief that a national award for this specialty can help highlight a problem and be a stimulus to begin thinking together about its resolution, we trust in the acceptance of the ‘invitation to participate in the Award from all and sundry artisans in the field.
The award is established as a tribute to master potter Gino Geminiani, who worked for 50 years in the city of Faenza, contributing with his work and commitment to keep alive and vibrant the interest in ceramics and the ‘art of working with clay. Gino worked hard to pass on the potter’s trade to young people and engaged in dozens of initiatives to promote Faenza pottery.
